1. Alexander Graham Bell was an eminent scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator who is credited with inventing the first practical telephone. His research on hearing and speech further led him to experiment with hearing devices which eventually culminated in Bell being awarded the first US patent for the telephone in 1876.
2. Sir Edmund Barton was an Australian politician and judge, served as the first Prime Minister of Australia and became a founding justice of the High Court of Australia.
3. Aristophanes was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. He is also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy.
4. Robert Boyle was a 17th century natural philosopher, chemist, physicist and inventor, also noted for his writings in theology. He is best known for Boyle's law and is largely regarded as the first modern chemist and therefore one of the founders of modern chemistry.
5. Geoffrey Chaucer is widely considered the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages and was the first poet to have been buried in Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey.
6. William Caxton was an English merchant, diplomat, writer and printer. As far as is known, he was the first English person to work as a printer and the first to introduce a printing press into England.
7. Sir George Cayley was a prolific English engineer and one of the most important people in the history of aeronautics. Many consider him the first true scientific aerial investigator and the first person to understand the underlying principles and forces of flight.
8. George Stephenson was an English civil engineer and mechanical engineer who built the first public railway line in the world to use steam locomotives.
9. Adam Smith was a Scottish social philosopher and a pioneer of political economy. Smith is widely cited as the father of modern economics and capitalism.
10. Ernest Rutherford was a New Zealand-born British chemist and physicist who became known as the father of nuclear physics.
