Book 4: Chapter 34 – Great Explorers

1. Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer. He was the commander of the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India.

2. Sir Francis Drake was an English sea captain, navigator and politician of the Elizabethan era. Elizabeth I of England awarded Drake a knighthood in 1581. 

3. Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer. His expedition of 1519-1522 became the first expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean.

4. Robert Edwin Peary, Sr. was an American explorer who claimed to have led the first expedition, on 6 April 1909, to reach the geographic North Pole.

5. Marco Polo was a merchant traveler of Venice. He learnt the mercantile trade from his father and uncle, who traveled through Asia.

6. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator. He completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean that led to general European awareness of the American continents.

7. Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer of polar regions. He led the Antarctic expedition (1910-12) to discover the South Pole in December 1911. He was the first expedition leader to reach the North Pole in 1926.
