Book 2: Chapter 19 – Tools
  1. A saw is a tool that uses a hard blade or wire with a sharp edge to cut through softer materials.
  2. Scissors are hand-operated cutting instruments. They consist of a pair of metal blades. It can also be used to cut hair and food.
  3. (i) A spanner or wrench is a tool used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying force to turn objects - usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts - or keep them from turning. (ii) A hammer is a tool meant to deliver an impact to an object. The most common uses are for driving nails, fitting parts, forging metal and breaking up objects.
  4. A hoe is an ancient and versatile agricultural tool used to move small amounts of soil.
  5. A carjack is a mechanical device used to lift heavy loads or apply great forces. The most common form is a car jack, floor jack or garage jack which lifts vehicles so that maintenance can be performed.
  6. A knife is a cutting tool with an exposed cutting edge or blade, hand-held or otherwise, with or without a handle. Knife-like tools were used at least two-and-a-half million years ago. Modern knives consist of a blade (1) and handle (2).
  7. Pliers are a hand tool used to hold objects firmly, for bending, or physical compression. There are many kinds of pliers made for various general and specific purposes.
