Book 5: Chapter 21 – Identifying Diseases
  1. Dermatophytosis or ringworm is a clinical condition caused by fungal infection of the skin in humans, pets such as cats and domesticated animals such as sheep and cattle.
  2. Sleepingsickness is a parasitic disease of people and animals, caused by protozoa of the species Trypanosoma brucei and transmitted by the tsetse fly. It is estimated that 50,000 to 70,000 people are currently infected, the number having declined somewhat in recent years.
  3. Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease of humans and other animals. Malaria transmission can be reduced by preventing mosquito bites by distribution of mosquito nets and insect repellents.
  4. Dengue fever, also known as breakbone fever, is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus.  Dengue virus is primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Dengue can also be transmitted via infected blood products and through organ donation.
  5. Rabies is transmitted by beasts, most commonly by a bite from an infected subject. Early-stage symptoms of rabies are head-ache and fever, progressing to acute pain, violent movements, uncontrolled excitement and depression.
  6. Cholera is an infection of the small intestine that is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The main symptoms are profuse watery diarrhea and vomiting.  Most bacteria, when consumed, do not survive the acidic conditions of the human stomach.  It is estimated that cholera affects 3-5 million people worldwide and causes 100,000-130,000 deaths a year as of 2010.
  7. Leishmaniasis is transmitted by the bite of certain species of sand fly. The symptoms of leishmaniasis are skin sores which erupt weeks to months after the person affected is bitten by sand flies. Physicians in the Indian sub-continent would describe it as kala-azar.
