Book 7: Chapter 43 – National Sports
1.

1.Sambo is a Russian martial art and combat sport. The word ‘SAMBO’ is an acronym for SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya, which literally translates as ‘self-defense without weapons’. Sambo is relatively modern since its development began in the early 1920s by the Soviet Red Army to improve their hand-to-hand combat abilities.

2. Water polo is a team water sport. The game consists of 4 quarters (or periods) in which the two teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into their opposition's goal, with the team that scores the most goals winning the game. A team consists of 6 field players and one goalkeeper in the water at any one time.

3. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art with a heavy emphasis on kicks. It was developed during the 1940s and 1950s by Korean martial artists, the most well-known being General Choi Hong Hi, as a combination of Okinawan karate, Chinese martial arts and the indigenous traditions of taekkyeon and gwonbeop.

4. Rodeo is a traditional sport in Chile. It was declared the national sport in 1962. It has since thrived, especially in the more rural areas of the country.

5.Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music, and is sometimes referred to as a game. It was developed in Brazil mainly by African descendants with native Brazilian influences, probably beginning in the 16th century. It is known for quick and complex moves, using mainly power, speed, and leverage for a wide variety of kicks, spins, and highly mobile techniques.

6. Pato is a game played on horseback that combines elements from polo and basketball. It is the national sport of Argentina since 1953.
